I don't understand. I don't think the parents are trying to force any of the schools to be Islamic in nature. They simply want to help their children to realize more success. When parents get involved with schools, studies have shown that academic achievement can go up in the long run.
Traditional public schools are a huge part of democracy in this nation. Our traditional public schools represent our communities. Our board members are voted in by the whole community. It's important that all schools, even the new ones, represent all of the community, not just part of the community.

My concern is not about religious centers being created in the middle of the business district where not much business is going on to begin with, but how these religious centers are going to adhere to the accommodation rules and parking space? Remember, religious services are held together, unlike a business center where not everyone come at the same time. It makes sense for such institutions to be build next to enough parking space so the worshipers will not have to worry about being ticketed.

I agree with Lisa, but we should work with schools that welcome us not those that use a dictator system.

Let's look at the facts:
- These building you are talking about has been vacant for a long period of time: Funeral Home (over 7 years ) , DTE building ( Over 5 years).
- Is it better to have these building occupied and well maintained or let them deteriorate and become blighted buildings (Shoppers World, Al Deeby Dodge..etc)
- Tax issue is irrelevant here, we could have located at a residential neighborhood taking over many houses to build an new center, which probably will add to more tax revenue loss than a building that is deteriorating and losing value.
- Places of worship tend to attract more people to do shopping and cause the economy of the city to thrive ( a lot of people come down to Hamtramck to worship in Catholic churches and they spend their money here).
- It's not just a matter of taxes, we pay several thousand in water and sewer bills contributing to water dept. budget, ( will be zero if building went unused).
- Parking is not an issue. Most people walk to attend religious services and this also encourages a more walk-able city inline with city policy.

You should not be biased towards religious institutions. They bring stability, community development and better citizens.

This sounds like a great idea but every school is different so I believe you should stick with a PTA per school instead of trying to run all of them at one time! Also, be considerate that like the economy is suffering, so are the school systems. Instead of trying to work against each school, try to become involved.
